Spectacular male has purple hood and white underparts marked with a black belly stripe. In central Ecuador, male has a small patch of green on the throat. This is a list of the bird species recorded in Ecuador including those of the Galápagos Islands. The avifauna of Ecuador has 1659 confirmed species, of which eight are endemic to the mainland and 31 are endemic to the Galápagos. Four have been introduced by humans, 77 are rare or vagrants, and one has been extirpated.

Mindo, Ecuador is an absolute paradise for birdwatchers. A two and a half hour bus ride from Quito, it's located in the cloud forest which supports an incredibly diverse bird population, including the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock that we stalked in the wee hours of the morning.
